Fulton County and a host of public and private agencies provided the County’s seniors with information regarding services that are currently available and plans for new services to make their lives more comfortable and safer.

The first order of business was the multi-panel symposium in Assembly Hall, which centered on three areas of great concern to older adults—transportation, employment and housing.   Executives from MARTA, the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, the Atlanta Regional Commission and the non-profit Common Courtesy car agency told of the greatly reduced costs for seniors of public transportation and Courtesy Car’s free service.

Fulton’s Personnel Director and Interim Manager of the Office of Workforce Development were joined by AARP’s Associate Director of Community Outreach on the panel discussing senior employment.   About one-quarter of audience members indicated they would like to obtain part-time employment to supplement their retirement income.

The interim Director of Housing and Community Development, the Interim Director of the Housing Authority of Fulton County and the CEO of Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership (ANDP) offered information regarding minor and major home repair services for seniors and efforts to revamp high rise senior living accommodations.

During lunch in the atrium, seniors were treated to music and entertainment.   Lunch was followed by training sessions on financial literacy and active living.

The Fulton County Aging and Youth Services Department is compiling all of the resource information presented and will make it available through the STARline—404-613-6000—by mid-June.   For more information about Fulton County services available to seniors, call 404-612-9558 for visit www.fultoncountyga.gov.
