Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment | Print |

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) will arrive on March 23, 2015, to examine all aspects of the Fulton County Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services, Chief of Police Cassandra A. Jones has announced.

 

Verification by the team that Fulton County Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain reaccreditation – a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence, she said.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session being held Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the Wolf Creek Library, located at 3100 Enon Road, Atlanta, GA.

Individuals who cannot attend the public information session may express their comments by calling 404-613-5506 on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 from the hours of 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA Standards. A copy of the standards is available at the police department. Local contact is Major Darryl Halbert, (404)613-5714.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Fulton County Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for reaccreditation are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc, 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155.

The Fulton County Police Department has to comply with 480 standards in order to gain reaccredited status, Chief Jones said.

The CALEA Program Manager for the Fulton County Police Department is Mr. Vince Dauro. The assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.

The assessors are: Major Paul Baggett, a 35 year veteran of the Polk County Florida Sheriff's Office; and Mr. Harold LeMay, a retired Lieutenant from the Avon (CT) Police Department after serving 30 years. 

Once the CALEA Assessors complete their review of the agency, they report to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted reaccredited status.

Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was reaccredited.
